Term 2 Issue 1

Welcome back to term two. I hope you all had an enjoyable break and made the most of the glorious weather over the holidays. Attached to this newsletter is the calendar of events for the second term. There are bound to be a few things that we have left off and will need to inform you about during the term.
STOP WORK MEETING-The teachers union, NZEI has called paid union meetings to discuss collective agreement claims for teachers. The claims are complex and teachers need to be informed before they are asked to vote. Accordingly school will be closing at 12.30 on Wednesday May 12 for teachers to attend this meeting. NZEI appreciates parents' support to enable teachers to attend their local meeting. I hope this will not cause too much inconvenience.
ELECTIVES-These will be starting this Thursday afternoon, May 6 and will run for 8 weeks. They will involve students in rooms 1,2 and 3. We already have four parents who are keen to help out. If you would like to help with a small group doing an art or craft activity please ring the school. We are also looking for donations of rice sacks and double knitting wool for the elective programme.
JEWELLERY-There are a lot of children wearing jewellery to school, in particular wrist bands and bracelets. Children are fiddling with these during learning time and fighting over them. Jewellery is not part of the uniform (a watch, small studs or sleepers are acceptable) and if children persist in bringing them to school they will be confiscated.
PRESCHOOLERS-If you have a little one starting school in the next couple of years could you please come and pre enrol them. Pre schoolers who are enrolled receive a free book on their birthday. So put their name on the pre enrolment list when they are two and they will get a free book each birthday for the next three years.
LATENESS-There are still a number of children who are arriving late in the morning. School starts at 8.45 Monday to Thursday and 9am on Friday. Thank you to those parents who ring and let us know if their child is going to be late. Children are asked to report to the office before going to class if they are late. A reminder that children are not supervised at school in the morning until 8.30am

As you are probably aware instead of asking for activity fees this year we are going to try to fundraise the amount we need. Over the next three terms we need to raise around $5000 to be successful (this is what is normally made by fundraising and activity fees). We have made a good start with about $500 being raised last term. So that all the parents are able to have an active role in this there will be a meeting for all parents in the hall on Monday May 10, from 5.30 to 6.30. We will look at the fundraising that has already started ie, mufti, sausages, hotdogs, grocery raffle-share other good ideas and look at what we have planned for the future. People will then be able to choose what they would like to help with during the rest of the year.. Grocery Raffle-A grocery raffle is underway. Next week is CAN week. Could parents please send a can of food along to school. We will run a class competition with a prize going to the class that has the greatest percentage of children contributing.

Welcome to our two newest children who started school on Monday. Cahan Martin and Timothy Lilomaiava both turned five during the holidays.
Reminders
Netball starts this Saturday for our 3 teams. The first couple of weeks are grading weeks
The Board of Trustees AGM is to be held next Wednesday evening in the staff room at 6pm. This is a public meeting and can be attended by anyone. After the meeting there will be a farewell for John Carr who is retiring after being on the Board for 15 years (12 0f those as chairperson). This is an open invitation to the school community
Could parents please make sure that that their child's Reading Book is returned every day. It is good for children to be responsible for doing this but sometimes they need reminding.
God bless you all
Linda
