A big welcome to two new children in the junior school, Malia Nehoa
and MalycheTafili who have both turned five in the last few weeks.
At present only one quarter of the children in year 7 and 8 have
paid their technicraft fee of $35. We have to pay Avalon Intermediate
for the children's technicraft so we need this bill to be paid.
COMING UP
Catholic Character sub committee meeting, Monday August 9, 9.30am
BOT Property sub committee, Tuesday 10, 6pm
Sausage sizzle-Thursday 12
Mufti-Friday 13
Wanted-Tissues for the classroom. Last term families sent in boxes
of tissues for children to use. If you haven't sent some in yet
we would appreciate it, there are lots of runny noses
HEALTH NEWS
Thank you to all the parents who attended the parent meeting last
week. Public Health Nurse, Martha Prasad, showed the levels of fat
and sugar that are in many of the foods we all eat and gave ideas
for children's healthy school lunches. By the end of our health
unit this term we would like our school to be a 'water school',
with all children drinking water during the school day. There are
still a lot of children who are bringing sports drinks, v's and
fizzy drinks to school. These contain huge amounts of sugar giving
children a quick burst of energy before they become tired and grumpy.
The school's new support worker Lorraine Sami also spoke at the
meeting. She talked about the support she can provide for families
who are experiencing difficulties. She is at our school on a Wednesday
morning from 10.30 to 12.30 or can be contacted at Taita Central
on a Monday morning, Stokes Valley School on Thursday morning and
Pomare School on a Friday morning. You can ring her at any of these
schools
PADDY MARKET-The bi annual Paddy Market will be held on Thursday
August 19. Thanks to all the parents who have already sent something
in. We are collecting things for the white elephant stall this week
The children are getting really involved in this and are looking
forward to the 19th.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION-This term children throughout the school are
working on the Jesus strand in their RE programme. Because classes
are more than one level, children spend the whole term working on
one topic covering it at two different levels. Rooms 1,2 and 3 have
RE in the mornings, whilst the junior school have it in the afternoon.
You are very welcome to come in and see what your child is doing
for Religious Education or join us for Mass.
As part of the RE programme each class will be attending Mass in
the school hall on a Thursday morning at 9am. The classes will go
as follows:
Thurs August 12-rooms 8 and 12 Thurs August 26-room 2
Thurs Sept 2-room 7 Thurs Sept 9-room 3 Thurs Sept 16-room 1
WINTER CLOTHING-Often during the winter the grass is dry enough
to play on but children must have spare clothes to wear. It is often
quite muddy and they cannot play on the grass in their school uniform.
Jackets need to be worn to school during the winter. We try to get
children outside for at least part of each day, for fresh air and
exercise, and some children are not wearing warm enough clothing
for this.
SAUSAGE SIZZLE/MUFTI
HELP-The sausage sizzle for fundraising will be next Thursday 12
August. This will be the only one for this term . We have the sausages,
but we need a few people to cook them. If you can help for an hour
or so on Thursday, please let the school know.
Friday August 13 is mufti day (it is also the first NPC game-Wellington
v Canterbury). All children wearing mufti need to bring a gold coin
donation.
I have read this weeks newsletter (Friday August 6)
