Friday February 4, 2005

The new school year has started on a very positive note. We have 139 students (18 new enrolments), a staff of 21 full and part time people, a freshly painted school, a glorious new sign that will be up shortly at the school gate and the promise of a new administration block at the end of the year. Staff and students are all happy to be back at school and children are already working hard in their classes.
UNIFORM-Summer uniform can be bought through the school. The uniform shop is open from 8.30 to 9.30 and then again from 2 until 3 on a Wednesday afternoon. Children need to be wearing the correct summer uniform , including a hat. Too many children are wearing incorrect footwear. Roman sandals (either black or brown) or plain black or brown sandals are summer footwear. Children's feet get very hot and smelly in sneakers in the summer. At the moment the Warehouse has Roman Sandals for around $15.
SWIMMING-Swimming starts on Tuesday February 15 (week 3). A detailed notice will be sent home next week with times, costs, request for helpers etc.
TUCK SHOP-The tuck shop is open and selling morning tea and lunch items. Hotdogs will still be available on a Wednesday. The cost of the hotdogs has increased to $2. As we are no longer selling drinks in the tuckshop, children need to bring a drink from home (most children bring water) or use the school drinking fountains
PARENT EVENING-On Tuesday February 15, the school will be open from 4 until 6 for any parent/caregiver who wishes to come into school and discuss their child's programme, goals or needs with their teacher. You do not need to make an appointment, just call into school between 4 and 6 on Tuesday 15. If you would like to talk to your child's teacher, but CANNOT make it that night, ring the school and we will arrange a time.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES-The first meeting for the Board of Trustees will be held on Tuesday February 15, at 7pm in the staff room.
NEWSLETTERS-A regular newsletter will be sent home during the year every second Friday. At the bottom of the newsletter is a return slip for parents to sign (so that we know that the newsletter has been read by adults in the house). The signed parts are returned to the school on a Monday and Tuesday and a draw is made for a free lunch on the Wednesday, for each child in the family drawn out. Parents are more than welcome to include things in the newsletter-just send them to school with your child.
PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE-The Public Health Nurse, Martha Prasad, will be in the school on a Wednesday morning from 9.30 until 11am. If you wish to see her just call into school during these hours. If you would like your child to be seen for any reason, ring the school in the morning and we will arrange it. The Mobile Ear Clinic will once again be in Taita (outside Plunket) on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month, from 2 until 4 and outside the Community House, Pomare, the 2nd and 4th Wednesday.

Term 1, Issue 1

I have read and understood the newsletter dated February 4, 2005
